People call us fairly often trying to decide between Halverson models, and the answer almost always comes down to the same few questions. Here’s how we’d walk through it.
What Are You Attaching It To?
Most of the Halverson processors we sell are skid steer attachments. If you’ve got a skid steer or compact track loader, you’re in good shape — the HWP-100, HWP-120, HWP-140B, HWP-150, and HWP-160 all run off skid steer hydraulics.
The HWP-100 also comes in a tractor-mounted version (the HWP-100TR-H) and a three-point hitch model (HWP-100-3P) for people running a tractor instead. If you don’t have a skid steer, that’s worth knowing upfront — it narrows your options and may change which model makes the most sense.
How Much Are You Processing?
This is probably the most important question. If you’re processing firewood for personal use or small-scale sales, the HWP-100 or HWP-120 will likely do what you need without paying for more machine than necessary. These are solid, capable processors — we’re not suggesting them because they’re the bottom of the line, but because they match the output most people actually need.
If you’re running a firewood business or processing at commercial volume, you want to be looking at the HWP-140B, HWP-150, or HWP-160. These are built for higher throughput, heavier daily use, and the kind of work where downtime costs you money. The HWP-160 is the top of the processor line — maximum cutting power, built for operations that are running the machine hard and often.
We use Halverson processors in our own operation here at Reaves Timber, and there’s a real difference between running a machine a few hours a week and putting it through a full commercial workday. Matching the machine to the actual workload matters.
Left-Handed Options
Worth mentioning if it applies to you: the HWP-140B and HWP-150 both have LH (left-hand) versions for operators who prefer that control layout. It’s a small thing, but if you’re running the machine all day, comfort adds up.
What About the Grapplesaw?
The HWP-200GS Grapplesaw is a different kind of tool than the processors. Instead of processing logs into firewood, it’s designed for cutting logs from the seat of your machine — useful for land clearing, logging operations, or anywhere you need to cut and handle timber without getting out of the equipment. If that’s part of what you do, it’s worth a look. We use equipment like this in our own land clearing work, so we can speak to it practically.
